The Shirakami-sanchi (Shirakami Mountains), located at the prefectural border between Akita and Aomori prefecture, was registered in the list of World Natural Heritage Site in 1993, along with Yakushima in Kagoshima prefecture. Both were the first registration from Japan. The Shirakami-Sanchi embraces a vast beech forest of about 17,000ha. There are various trekking routs for you. You surely feel the vigorous power of beeches.

Kimimachizaka Prefectural Nature Park Stay: About 30 minutes
A 40-minute drive in the National Route 7 from the Port of Noshiro eastwardly takes you to the Kimimachizaka Prefectural Nature Park. Here, trees are scattered in the steep cliff. The beauty of red and yellow colored leaves in autumn here will take your breath away.

Shirakami-Sanchi World Heritage Conservation Center (Fujisato) Stay: About 30 minutes
Before entering Shirakami-sanchi, call in the center. You will be ready to climb the mountain by learning about the history of Shirakami-sanchi and the vegetation distribution. The nature advisers are always stationed. They will answer to your questions. The center is available free of charge.

Daira Gorge in Akita Sirakami Prefectural Nature Park Stay: About 20 minutes
The beautiful color contrast of green leaves and white rocks is patterned in Daira Gorge. In the stream there, blue water and white horses at a ford turn to be deep green at a deep pool. The sound of the flowing river is sometimes high, and sometimes low. It is so refreshing to take a walk along with it.

Dakedai Nature Observation Educational Forest (about 1km for trekking) Stay: About 60 minutes
Going 1km northwardly from the end point of the trail in Daira Gorge, you will get the crossroad of Nishimeya-Futatsui line of the prefectural road on the right side (7.7km from the prefectural boarder) and the Kuroishi forest road on the left side. Take the left way to go Kurumi-dai Sport Forest. This is a camping site which is available free-of-charge. 5km from here, there is Dakedai Nature Observation Educational Forest which is famous for smoky rocks and beeches. The primeval beech forest is about 12ha, where trekking road is weaving for about 1.8km. You can have simulated experience as if you were in the world heritage site, Shirakami-sanchi (off-limit area). Not many places can give you this kind of opportunity.
