Shinminato Hikiyama Festival (Shinminato Float Festival)

October 1 and 2 Finished

With a unique shout of "Iya-sa, Iya-sa", 13 hikiyama floats echo the majestic squeaks with elegant Hikiyama Hayashi (a festival music played with the Japanese taiko drums and flutes) and are accompanied to the shrine mikoshi togyo (festival of the divine spirits moving to other places from the main shrine). These floats were decorated with “Hanayama (defined as flower decorations)” during the daytime and “Chochin yama (defined as lanterns)” at night. Their magnificent figure parading on the street gives the locals excitements and make this annual event lively together.

Takaoka Manyo Festival

Friday, October 5 to Sunday, 7 Finished

The City of Takaoka has worked on the project of “the hometown creation of Manyo (literally meaning “Ten Thousand Leaves”) due to the fact that Ōtomo no Yakamochi, a representative poet of Man’yōshū, an oldest existing collection of poetry in Japan, served as a provincial governor of the region including Takaoka in the Nara Period which covers from from AD 710 to 794. Takaoka Manyo Festival is one of the main events derived from this project.
In this festival, cultures and entertainments cultivated and handed down for generations in a long history are combined together and a lot of visitors from within or outside the prefecture participate in it.

In Takaoka Kojo Park, the main event venue, the festival includes various Manyo-related events such as a complete recitation of Man’yōshū, during which all 4,516 poems contained in the 20 volumes of this poetry collection are read in relays over three nights, public performances, a Manyo festival tea party and Ecchu Sanpu (3 lyrical long poems in Japanese style by Ōtomo no Yakamochi) live concert.
